Getting started

l plateWhat do I need to start driving ?

l plateCheck your eyesight

Before you apply for your licence  make sure you can read a number plate in good daylight from 20.5 metres away –  ensure you can read the registration plate of a car about 5 car lengths away from you., a main road is good for this.  If you wear glasses or contact lenses, that’s fine. Just make sure you always wear them when driving.

l plateA provisional licence

You will need a provisional licence, you can apply for this up to three months before your 17th birthday or as soon as you’re 16, if you are disabled and receiving a mobility allowance. Once you have your licence and aged 17 you can legally drive a car on public roads in the UK.

You can apply online at www.motoringdirect.gov.uk . You can also apply by post using a D1 form from your local Post Office. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee of £50.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD.

l plateL Plates

Whilst under tuition  you will need to put 'L' plates on the front and back of your car. You are only allowed to drive a car with someone who has a full driving licence, is over 21 and has been driving for three years or more. Obviousley if you are learning with us at Auto 1st Driving School you have no need to supply L plates.

l plateInsurance

When you are having your lessons with us, we insure the car. However if you are practising with friends or family, you will need to ensure that you are  covered on their insurance policy.

l plateYour car

Even as a learner driver you have the responsibility to ensure that any car you drive is  legal, roadworthy and properly taxed. Whilst you are taking your lessons with Auto 1st  this is all taken care of in our Ford Fiesta 'Style' Automatic.

l plateBooking your first Driving lessons

The big day is here and you are ready to book your first lessons - remember todays roads are challenging and you need the best start with the best preparation as possible. Here at Auto 1st we will put you in the driving seat from your first lesson that is the difference learning in an automatic car, it allows you as a new driver to concentrate on the road.

l plateIn a hurry to drive?

We would always advise that it is usually better to learn to drive over a sustained period of time, however we recognise that life sometimes just doesn't allow for that, for example, you may need to pass your test before you go to University. In these situations we offer a fast track programme designed to make you safe and confident behind the wheel as quickly as possible.

l plateNot confident ?

Don't worry, it’s perfectly natural. We at Auto 1st build your confidence tailoring lessons into a bespoke programme to meet your requirments. You will learn with a professional fully qualified ADI instructor. We know through expereince how to help you get over your anxieties and put you at ease. Call us on 0785 2928264 and we will be happy to talk it through with you.
